Preview: Investigating Worldview Through The Psalms

Investigating Worldview …’ is a field, so broad, so wide, and so high! The finitudes and infinitudes of its space and time, within and beyond, have engaged the wondering eye since persons first beheld its glory! Yet, the recognition of its formal ‘intellectual conceptions in contemporary thought and culture’ can be dated back just over two centuries, to the German Kant’s Weltanschauung, (English worldview)  in 1790.

This blogspot will invite you to approach worldview by sharing in its smorgasbord spread: taking many ‘bite-size’ portions, served up on golden platters … imported from a widespread, well-known and well-loved cuisine … the Psalms of the Old Testament scriptures.

The ESV Bible’s Introduction to the Psalms makes its first appeal to Bible believers.

… Through The Psalms’ is chosen as a starting point, with Judaeo-Christian worldview people first in mind; a people whose embrace of it in western culture is declining rapidly; according to a joint Summit Ministries-Barna Group, 83% of those claiming to be Christians “adapting an extraordinary amount of ideas that are rooted in competing worldviews: New Spirituality, Secularism, Postmodernism, Marxism, and Islam.”

Then, the Psalms appeal to a much broader number of people:

Zabur (Arabic: زبور) is, according to Islam, the holy book of Dawud (David), one of the holy books revealed by God before the Qur’an, alongside others such as the Tawrat ((Torah) of Musa (Moses) and the Injil (Gospel) of Īsā (Jesus). Some scholars equate the Zabur with the biblical book of Psalms.

But then, might not the Psalms also appeal to a broader range of worldview persons?

A crisp, compelling article by Bruce Clark, The Psalms, the sacred, and the secular (or: to worship is human), echoes the sentiment of the blogspot’s author, that …

The psalms are profoundly human, articulating harsh realities experienced not only by the faithful but, in varying degrees, by everybody, including secular, irreligious persons, (and) “… the Psalms, thick with universal human experiences, bring the meaning of worship alive, perhaps both to the saint and to the secularist” [and, to the Marxist, to the Postmodernist, as to the New Ager, and to many other worldview peoples].”

THE BIBLE PROJECT: OVERVIEW OF THE PSALMS

Our first task will be to overview the Psalms, using the slide summary below that accompanies the Bible Project Overview of the Psalms video …

‘(The Bible Project) overview video on the book of Psalms (with the slide summary)  … breaks down the literary design of the book and its flow of thought. The book of Psalms has been designed to be the prayer book of God’s people as they wait for the Messiah and his coming kingdom.

(A larger print version of this slide summary is included at the end of these notes).

SUGGESTIONS FOR READING THE PSALMS WORLDVIEWISHLY

By the grace of its personal-infinite God, this project will embrace all 150 of the Psalms. Written from about 1400 B.C. to about 540 B.C., we will blog them worldviewishly within the five traditional books:

  • Book I: Psalms 1 & 2 & 3 – 41;
  • Book II: Psalms 42 – 72;
  • Book III: Psalms 73 – 89
  • Book IV: Psalms 90 – 106
  • Book V: Psalms 107 – 145 & 146 – 150.

The psalms will generally be blogged sequentially in sets of five psalms, each set followed by a review. This allows you, the reader, options for the pace at which you may choose to follow the blogs: firstly the option to follow one set each week, five psalms for weekdays, with their review for the weekend; or to follow the blogs at a different pace, as suits you best.

By following these blogspot notes for the 150 psalms, the reader, amongst many other devotional benefits, will gain a substantial understanding of:

* worldview generally;

* the Judaeo-Christian worldview particularly; and,

* elements of other dominant worldviews importantly.

General Suggestions for the reading of a Psalm and these Blog Notes

Each time you pick up a psalm, you are encouraged to see yourself coming into the presence of the Personal, Infinite God of the Bible. Just as the Psalmists wrote the words God inspired for them, so read them as coming from Him to you.

A Study Bible, and the internet should help you find out specific points of information you might be seeking along the way.

Ask the …

questions as you seek to understand a Psalm.

The aspects of worldview will be dictated by each Psalm’s context and content.

Then, at the end of each psalm post, as you seek to communicate with God through the psalm, this acronym may be a frame helpful for doing that:

   A doration, Praise, Worship of the Divine God of the Psalmist;

   C onfession of human limitedness, and of personal sins;

   T hanksgivings from your life suggested by the Psalmist;

   S eeking, Asking, Request prayers related to the Psalm.

A notebook may be a handy way of recording your reflections on each psalm and section of psalms.

My prayer for you is that the Sovereign Lord God of the Psalms will reveal Himself to you, as you seek His face; and that you will come to cherish the unsurpassable worth of knowing the Psalmist’s God, and of His Messiah Christ.

PSALM 2

God’s King rules over nation, church, family & individual. Psalms 1 and 2 stand as the two majestic royal pillars at the entrance to the Psalter. Jesus’ apostles Peter and John ascribed them to David. Read and understand it first as applying to David’s coronation...
